February 27th, 2002Progress UpdateHere's a mild update to give everyone an idea of what's going on.  I've completed like 99% of the popular textures, but there are still a few rarely-used ones to go.  I think I included waaaaay too many textures in the original release.  Some of them are even repeats.  Oh well.

We're probably not going to support software mode anymore, at least with the initial 2.0 release.  If you can't go out and pay 10 bucks for a 3D card, well, go complain on the bboard, and maybe we'll change our mind. :)

There are a ton of other groups working on cheat protection stuff, so I'll probably be working off of their stuff since they can do a much better job than we have time to do.  If you have any suggestions for anti-cheat packages that look promising, post some ideas on the bboard.

February 15th, 20023v3 TourmentPenguin and MFornal have set up a 3v3 tournament.  Go to their site or #DPRevival on IRC.EnterTheGame.com for more inforamation.
February 3rd, 2002UMich Match ServerCalrathan has switched the method used to obtain the match server's password.  Use "/ctcp Calrathan match" instead of "!match" now.
January 30th, 20021.731 for Linux (finally)Ok, there's finally a working version of 1.731 for Linux.  I'm not sure why the one I compiled didn't work, but it didn't, so I finally nagged Sad into compiling it, and you can snag it off of the Files page if you want to run a Linux server.
Paintball II v2.0?Well, I don't know how many of you knew, but we've been planning on releasing a 2.0 of Paintball II sometime in the future.  Originally this was meant to include lots of new stuff (thus breaking away from the 1.x versioning system) such as vweap, some new gameplay modes, a sophisticated map/game mode voting system, a new map or two, and whatever else made its way in there.  However, since the Quake2 source has been released, the sky is no longer the limit (quite literally in some cases where the sky clips off the map, heh heh).

Now we will be able to:
- have 32-bit textures for maps and models (see POTD)
- make Paintball II a standalone game (You won't have to have Quake2 installed to play it, and no, you won't have to pay for it).
- impliment better anti-cheat code

The downside is that we will have to do a lot more work so it'll be a while before 2.0 will be released.  If you're interested in helping out, here are the kind of things that need to be done:
- new player sound effects (we can't use any copyrighted Quake2 material) such as jumping, walking, landing in water, etc.
- new player model (one that actually looks like a paintball player)
- vweap for that player model

If you're capable of doing any of these things hop on #pbdev on irc.enterthegame.com, or post some msgs on the bugs and suggestions forum.  If you aren't capable and would just like to chill out and throw around some ideas, that's cool too. :)
