November 13th, 1998CrossfireAs the newest Digital Paint member I have been working on trying to compile Hellsurv and Splatterhouse for Paintball 2. I have been unsuccesful so far but will keep trying. I also have been working on my own map entitled Crossfire. Take a peek at this new map which will be included in the much anticipated Beta 5. Screenshot #1, Screenshot #2, Screenshot #3. November 12th, 1998New MemberWell, its been a while since DP has signed on new talent, but thats just what we have done now! After some discussion, we determined that we needed some help in the web page updating, graphical and PR aspects of the development processes. This coupled with an offer from a long standing friend and clan member of most of the DP members has driven us to accept the gracious offer of support from none other than Nutiket, leader and founder of Clan Splat, which ended its run with a 52-9 win/loss record, incredible in any light. So welcome aboard Nut! Expect to see posts from him in the near future. Thanks everyone. News on Beta 5As i have said before we are quite behind due to unforseen problems. I had my maps compiling on a different computer and they took forever then froze the computer. Badlands isnt close to finished as i decided it sucked (799 rspeeds too) and have a new layout i wanna use. The code is being an ass too, and zoid isnt giving me any streight answers. I already wasted 2 days just figuring out that the HUD doesnt allow the win32 long file names. It gives no error, just acts screwy... Nutiket, our new member has attempted to compile Hellsurv and SplatterHouse also. Hellsurv made his computer reboot and report a faulty HD before it finished, and SplatterHouse finished compiling after 12 hours, only to report a "VisMap Expantion Overflow". The explanation as to what causes this is at best vague, and we will be attempting to decern the exact cause. .Plan System, CGIAt the request of Dakota for a .Plan system, i have offered up my coding skills and done a quick rewrite of the PBC Finger system to allow for groupings and adminstration of .plans, and have it almost all done. Already the DP people are using it to update with information you may find interesting. If you want to know the most up to date information from the word of the designers mouths, hop over to http://24.131.9.197/cgi-bin/plans/plans.pl and read the Unnoficial word on the street. The plans are not in anyways to be assumed as official sources of information, but if your curious as to what we have to say, feel free to look. (If that made no sence, its because im tired as hell) Have fun guys! 3rd Party MapsSince there is now a large number of third party maps that have been created by fans of DP, I've decided to make a new downloads page dedicated to third party maps. The new page will make the maps available to all and provide a central source for the maps. If you have created a new map for DP, that you would like to make available to others, please email a zipped copy of the map to me so that I can upload it to the ftp server (please make sure it is the FINAL version). Even if you have already sent me a copy of your map, please send me another copy, I'm not sure if I have the latest versions. I would like to thank all of you who took the time to make DP maps! November 9th, 1998BuahahaI couldn't help putting this up... It came along at just the perfect time (the time when i'm about to destroy windows... hey, that's most of the time!). BMW has a billboard with "OUR HARDWARE RUNS BETTER WITHOUT WINDOWS" and a picture of a BMW convertible. I love it! Makes a great desktop background :) Here it is. (or you can see it as potd today) News ArchiveOctober news has been archived. Overflow FixProbably caught your eye... With some questioning of Zoid about rate settings, Zoid explained that it's not the rate at all! What causes so much lag is the framerate! Q2 sends a packet every frame (don't know why they made it that way, it's really dumb), so if you've got a nice souped up system and a fast 3D card and your flyin' around at 80 fps, you know what that means? LAG. You send a packet every frame, so you are sending 80 packets per second, which is more than most connections can handle... leading to an overflow. How do you fix this? Simple, bring down the console (hit ~), and type cl_maxfps 30 and hit enter. This should help reduce the overflows greatly. ARGH!Computers can be such a pain in the butt. I've had yet more problems with my computer (believe it or not). I had everything almost set up back to the way I liked it, started working on a map... I opened a big one, so it was taking a lot of memory, went to the bathroom while I waited for the HD to stop thrashing... came back, and the computer was rebooting! It goes into NT and then says that ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupted AGAIN! So, back to the routine I had done about 3 times in the past couple of days. I started installing WinNT again, but I ran into a big problem. When I had to select what drive I wanted to install to, the NTFS drive I had been using before was a "Corrupt or Unknown format." Cute :P I now have it installed on my FAT drive with a whopping 50 megs to spare... Marines are BackThe Paintball1 clan called the Marines (POnyPOweR, J5, Zimbu, and OddJob) is back together for Paintball II. Good luck guys :) November 4th, 1998Hardware Has a Reason for its NameUgh, sorry about the lack of updates lately. I got my new motherboard that I ordered for my new Riva TNT video card (Yes, I bought the motherboard to go with the video card... needed and AGP slot), and, as usual, many problems occurred. My modem has some conflict that it didn't have before, so I haven't been online the past few days. Now, for some reason, Win95 takes a good 30+ minutes to boot... at least. Not only that, but I managed to screw up my WindowsNT kernel, and when I tried to reinstall it (for the 5th or 6th time this year), I ran out of disk space... so I deleted some stuff and tried again. When I tried to "repair" it, it continuously reboots with the message "Setup is now rebooting." ARGH! So I now have a freshly installed WinNT (again) that I have to redo all my settings, re-register all the software, etc... Ugh :P You might ask "Is it worth all this for a video card?" YES! The Riva TNT kicks so much ass! It does to the Voodoo what the Voodoo does to software. "Wow." Screenshots don't do it justice... tho I will still be posting some :) Great Gib OlympicsIt's not really paintball related, but I got first place in Quake1 DM at the Great Gib Olympics. W00T! I'll have to put a pic up of the medal (cpu painted gold) and trophy (motherboard painted gold, mounted on a 2x4), as well as the other little misc. useless stuff I got if/when I get my scanner working. You don't know the term "insane" 'till you get 30+ people on DM4 on a LAN. This was my basic strategy: 1. Find a powerful weapon quickly (preferably rocket launcher). 2. Aim toward the largest bunch of people, and fire till you die. 3. Spawn and repeat steps. I had forgotten how much more fun QuakeWorld DM is compared to Quake2. Almost as fun as paintball ;) Digital Splat => PBNDigital Splat has changed its name to Paintball News, so if you were wondering about those tourneys... they are the same one :) So make sure you email RaiN and sign up! November 3rd, 1998Last Clan Standing (LCS) DP Paintball Tournament! The Last Clan Standing paintball tournament has found a new home over at the Paintball News page, which is run by DaveMan2, RaiN, and GoldBond. Seven clans have signed up for the tournament so far. Get on over there and sign your clan up. It should be a load of fun! Refer to the LCS page for more information on the tourney.
The Paintball News page is a great new source for anything that has to do with paintball for Quake/Quake2. Make sure to bookmark this one! New Map - The House of PaintDon't forget to head over to the files page and download GoldBond's new map called "The House of Paint." This map is already running on the Digital Paint Server #2.
