January 24th, 2004Linux v1.771 Server UpdateIt turns out that there was a little bug with the last Paintball 2 server release that could be exploited and crash the server. This is a small update to fix it. Grab it in the files section if you’re running a Linux server.
Oh, and I forgot to mention this in the last update, but there’s a new option in v1.77+ servers to set the minimum client build a player must have to connect: sv_minclientbuild. This only works for build 7 or higher clients. If you only want people using the new version to be able to connect, set it to 7. January 20th, 2004Paintball 2 Server v1.77 for LinuxThe 1.77 server update is already included with the windows Paintball 2.0 alpha build007. This is just for people running Linux servers. Update includes:
- Bot bugfixes (though the bots aren’t really ready for public use yet) - Jail bugfixes (you can shoot people that are the same color now; observers don’t get stuck in jail) - po/pr/pb/pp/py serverinfo cvars fixed. (These display who’s on what team from server browsers) - “stats” shows the accuracy of each weapon you use. This will eventually be added to the menu interface for the client. - Message of the day now displays in the center of the screen when players connect. - Players with passwords set aren’t kicked for bad passwords when the server has no password set. - HUD updates properly when using the chasecam. - Formatted names don’t screw up the rest of the text.
Grab it on the files page if you’re planning on setting up a Linux server. This update still requires the Linux Quake2 executable. January 19th, 2004Timestamped Messages CrashThere is a bug with the timestamps that will be fixed in the next version. For now, don't use them (setup/layout menu). Paintball 2.0 Alpha Build 007 ReleasedIt’s finally here! Paintball 2.0 is getting a fresh, new look with build 007. Here’s what’s new:
- Cvar: sv_minclientbuild [0, 7, or higher] If you are running a server, it checks that the client is using at least this build number (only works with build 7 and up). - Cvar: con_notifytime [1 or higher] Time (in seconds) to display messages at the top of the screen. Archives now, also the number of lines displayed has been doubled. - Cvar: vid_lighten [0.0 to 0.5] Brightens dark areas linearly for those monitors that like to make dark stuff completely black (paired with vid_gamma for more control). - Bugfix: fixed crashing on some cards due to a multitexture bug. - Bugfix: Mouse no longer goes crazy when you click outside of Quake2 in windowed mode. - Bugfix: Old HUD icons aren't so blurry anymore. - Bugfix: Some buffer overrun security holes from the original Quake2 engine have been fixed. - Feature: (for mappers) combining trans33+trans66 will make the surface use only the transparency of the texture. Useful for fences, bushes, and other objects that should only be transparent in selected areas. - Feature: New font with text formatting! Ctrl-k followed by a character allows you to color text. 0-9 are black-white, A-Z are a full spectrum of colors. Lots of other characters have different colors as well. Ctrl-U underlines text. Ctrl-I puts it in italics. - Feature: Scriptable menu system. Menus are easily customizable with text files and provide a direct interface with the console variables and commands. - Feature: You can use extended characters in your name. - Feature: New cvar macros let you place cvars directly next to other text by surrounding them with $'s. Example: "echo name:$name$" - Feature: writeconfig command writes settings to a specified file (also available through the menu). - Feature: seta sets a cvar so that it's archived (saved in config.cfg) like in Quake3. - Feature: cvar_cat <cvar> <string> command concatenates a string onto the end of a cvar's string, ie: cvar_cat name "oe" will add "oe" to the end of your name. (This is primarily for menu usage).
If you have build 003 or higher, you can just grab the upgrade. Make sure you extract it into the same directory that you extracted the previous version to, for example, extract to c:\games\ not c:\games\paintball2 – the paintball2 folder is created automatically. If you don’t have a previous version installed, you can grab the full release and extract it anywhere you want. Both are available on the Files page.
If you experience any bugs or crashes, please be sure to report them!
January 12th, 2004Paintball2 Alpha Build007 is Near! Those of you who visit the bboard will know that there’s some pretty cool stuff coming up in the next build. The primary features include a new font, which can be formatted (colored, italicized, and underlined), and a scriptable menu system. Here are some screenshots to wet your appetite:
This release will be a fairly buggy one, but that’s why it’s still labeled “alpha.”
December 25th, 2003Merry Christmas!I wish I had a new release or something to put up as a little Christmas present for you all today, but the latest build has been a huge task (completely reworking the user interface for the menus and such), and I've been busy graduating from Clemson (pulled a 4.0!) and hanging out with the family for the holidays, so the progress has been rather slow, but it is coming along! After this release, new builds should be much more frequent, so have a wonderful Christmas and look forward to all the awesome new stuff coming to Paintball2 in 2004!
